The FZ18 is the successor to the FZ8. The biggest change in the guts of the camera is the more powerful zoom lens. The FZ8 had a 12x optical zoom and the FZ18 gets an 18x optical zoom. Besides that, there is a small resolution bump to 8 megapixels from 7.1 megapixels, and the 2.5 inch LCD is of higher resolution on the FZ18. Software-wise, Panasonic has introduced their Intelligent Auto mode on the FZ18, which essentially bundles face recognition, continuous AF, Intelligent ISO control, and image stabilization on one easy to use auto mode.

Panasonic has been a key player in the super-zoom field since the launch of its impressive Leica-lenses Lumix DMC-FZ1 back in 2002, and has maintained this position with a series of well-received models in the same series. Today I’m taking a look at the latest in the line, the FZ18, which offers a tempting specification for anyone with 300 to spend. It has an 8.1 megapixel CCD, 2.5in 230k LCD monitor, RAW mode shooting and a massive 18x Leica zoom lens with optical image stabilization and a 28-504mm equivalent focal length range.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 is shaped like an SLR, but is more compact. The hand grip is coated with textured rubber that almost feels silky. At the top of the rubber panel is a shallow divot wide enough for the index finger to comfortably wrap around the front of the camera. At the tip of the hand grip, the zoom ring that surrounds the shutter button is visible. To the right of the shutter release and protruding portion of the hand grip is a small Panasonic DMC-FZ18 label.

The back of the FZ18 also looks very similar to the FZ8. Both cameras have a 2.5-inch LCD screen on the left that is on a platform that is raised from the body by a few millimeters. To the right of the LCD is about 1.5 inches of space occupied by the same buttons as the FZ8. To the upper right of the LCD is a tiny joystick. The left side looks identical to the FZ8 with the exception of the lens specs of course. The older model has a 12x optical zoom lens and the Panasonic FZ18 has an 18x optical zoom lens, although the cameras are about the same size.

The right side of the camera looks familiar. It is also nearly identical to the FZ8. The only difference is the addition of a thumb grip on the back of the camera that is visible on this side of the FZ18. In front of that thumb grip is a chrome eyelet for the neck strap, and the rubber hand grip surface in front of that. Two chrome neck strap eyelets flank the top of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, which is oddly shaped. The lens barrel looks enormous when viewed from above. The flash component sits atop it. The viewfinder juts out from the flash component. Directly right of the viewfinder is the round mode dial. It has many more positions than the FZ8 including custom and several scene modes. The bottom of the camera is quite thick. There is a metal tripod socket that is slightly off-center of the lens, which could make it tough to mount. Below the hand grip is a plastic friction grip door that covers the battery and memory card slots

Digital Cameras: Caring for the Camera Lens

The popularity of a digital camera is due in part to the vivid, life like photographs that it can produce. The lens of a camera is the key to creating these clear, sharp images. However, dust, fingerprints, scratches, and other dirt and smudges can destroy contrast, produce pictures that appear out of focus, and eventually can result in the expense of having to replace the lens, or camera, altogether.

Obviously, proper care can help extend the life of the lens and assure better quality images. Following just a few basic tips can go a long way in assuring a digital camera lens does not fail.

* Avoid contact with the camera lens when possible. Keeping the lens cover on and placing the camera in the bag when not in use can shield it from dust and other potential damage. Basically, anything that comes in contact with the lens of a digital camera can damage the special coatings that allow the lens to function properly. Extra care should be taken when shooting pictures to assure that the lens is not touched as it is grasped in the hands.

* Keep lenses away from excessive heat which can breakdown the greases used within the barrel of the lens.

* Add a UV filter over the camera lens as an extra layer of protection.

* Keep the lens dry. Moisture whether from your breath, condensation, a cleaner or another source can create fogging and, in some case, can warp the lens housing. Because of the potential damage from moisture, care must be taken in exposing your camera to cold as condensation may form when it is returned to a warmer environment.

* Remove visible particles from the lens without touching it when possible. Using an ear syringe or special dust blower is the preferred method. Soft bristled brushes are available as well but care must be taken to assure that the brushes are clean and do not scratch the surface of the camera lens.

* Remove fingerprints and smudges with a dry microfiber cloth. Lens cleaning fluids are available and can also be applied to the microfiber cloth as needed. The fluid should not be applied directly to the lens. Only cleaners made specifically for camera lenses should be used; do not use cleaners made for eyeglasses.

* Use extra care in harsher environments. As described above heat and cold extremes can cause damage to lenses as well as the camera itself. Because cameras travel with us however, they are sometimes exposed to environments that are somewhat “hostile”. Thus, extra precautions are sometimes necessary. For instance, in extremely cold weather it is generally best to carry the camera close to the body, perhaps covered by a coat to keep it warmer. On rainy days wrapping the camera in a plastic bag can help shield it from the moisture. The beach can also be hostile due to the potential exposure to wind, sand, moisture, and heat. Again, covering the camera with a plastic bag and shading it from the sun are good preventative measures.

Reducing contact and exposure to contaminants, proper cleaning, and protecting the lens from extreme environments are key to assuring the longevity of a camera lens. These basic precautions entail minimal expense and time commitment and can become second nature very quickly to beginning photographers.

A tip I can share is that you can turn the screen off to conserve power when you are not taking any shot or when walking around.

Digital Zoom. When you zoom in and out, you use battery power to drive the motor. To avoid this, go nearer to your subject so that you do not have to activate the zoom as much.

Tips to make your batteries last longer

We have just seen the biggest power users on your digital camera the LCD screen and flash. To conserve your battery power, you should work to reduce the usage of these.

First, reduce the brightness of your LCD screen. It will still allow you to view your shot composition but it will result in some battery power savings.

Secondly, when you are not taking a shot and just walking around, switch off your LCD to viewfinder mode instead. The viewfinder mode is where you view through the viewfinder to take a picture instead of using the LCD screen to do it. It does not consume energy unless you activate the digital zoom to zoom in and out.

The Holiday season is just around the corner. We have been busting our butt getting ready for it. We purchased a 2 megapixel Digital Camera, which was adequate for our needs. We then progressed to the 5 megapixel and we currently own an 8 megapixel camera. These little things are incredible. I have not picked up my SLR in years!
Not only are they great for photos they can also be used as camcorders! I am now putting up short advertising videos on YouTube! I have fallen in love with these little cameras! They are so incredibly versatile. You can carry them in your pocket or even put them in your glove box. Every small business person should have one or two. We can take a series of photographs, and then we take the memory card out of the camera and slip it into our card reader
Why a card reader? This ensures that the camera will not be accidently dropped while connected to the computer (this has happened before). Memory cards are cheap now. You can acquire a 1 GB card for around 10 bucks. We have several of these cards. And they can hold an incredible number of photographs and a dozen or so YouTube videos. Actually, I have never filled up a 1 GB card.
You will also need several rechargable batteries. These little demons can consume batteries like you would not believe. If you read reviews about Digital Cameras, this is the biggest complaint.
These cameras are a must have for any one that sells on Ebay or has an online store. The resolution can be as fine as you want it and the price is coming down at an alarming rate. I pick up cameras when they are sale, as they are outdated in months, and not years, like in the early days. The Videos are good enough for YouTube? Many of the videos on YouTube are made with with inexpensive webcams. I was quite startled to see some of the quality of “popular” youtube videos. They are not even close to your 6 o’clock news type videos. Many people just use a webcam and a mic. There is no scripting for their videos. Many of them are just talking heads
Take a look at them, and see for yourself. Pick up some digital cameras and start shooting to your delight. But make them interesting. Make people want to see them.
